Cultural or Spiritaul? (1 Corinthians 11:4-6)

 There is a Spiritual understanding to the Bible. A child may have learned stories.  He learns the story of Adam and Eve.  He learned the story of David and Goliath.  He learned the story of Mary and Joseph fleeing Herod with baby Jesus.  An older man reading the Bible for the first time, in the Old Testament, there is a lot of narrative.  We have the stories of the Kings of Israel.  Getting into the Prophets and The New Testament, there is a shift.   To understand the Prophets, someone may need to have a Spiritual understanding.  A lot of the New Testament gets into a Spiritual understanding of the Bible.  This brings us to 1 Corinthians 11:4-6.  Is it just a cultural thing that a woman should cover her head when she prays, or is it a Spiritual thing?  A lot of people dismiss certain things in the New Testament as cultural.  It is not cultural, and I will show you.

Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.  (1 Corinthians 11:4-6)

To show how 1 Corinthians 11:4-6 is Spiritual, we may need to start with men.  When men pray, they should remove their hat.  They should not pray with their head covered.  What we are looking for are themes through history and the Bible.  Where has someone covered or not covered their head when they pray and why?

  •  In the US, it has been tradition for men to remove their hats when they come indoors, when they pray, or for something like the National Anthem.  Some traditions like this, they have been attacked by a Counter Culture in the 1970's.  A lot of people don't keep the traditions as much.  There has been a tradition.
  • Some American Indians, they believed the soul resided on the head.  This is part of where scalping came from.
  • Tonsure.  Monks would cut their hair in a particular way. They don't keep the tonsure after Vatican II.
  • The Jews wore a Yamaka.The Catholics and Orthodox clergy have a variety of interesting hats they wear.
  • Ultra Orthodox Jews from New York....they specifically pray with a hat on purposely.
  • Personally, I ended up with a bald spot about where someone may have worn their Yamaka.  Not quite a tonsure.  To me, in a calling I received from God....this is No Leaf Clover.  It wasn't an accident.

In looking at history, there may be some themes that show up. Receiving something from God is like receiving the answer in the back of a math book. Given we have the right answer, we may be able to work out what has been going on or happening.

The Talmudic Jews, about 100-150 years after Jesus, they went MGTOW.  They were men going their own way.  They decided that there were no more Prophets, and they were not hearing from God.  They became Luciferian.  A Luciferian believed that Jesus Christ is the dark, and man or something else is the light.  Given Talmudic Jews are wearing a hat when they pray it may be a sign of Luciferianism.

In a Christian sense, was someone wearing a hat when they pray?  It may be that someone was spiritually blind and deaf, and was unaware.  Given someone was a priest or pastor they should know better?  Given someone was wearing a hat when they pray, it may have been a sign of Luciferianism.

What about women?  Should they cover their head when they pray?  Woman is man's Glory.  A woman's glory is her hair.  In Catholic and Orthodox traditions, more traditional Christians cover their head at Church.  It wasn't just cultural.  Where in the Bible may we find "A woman's hair is her glory?" Isaiah 3 has God's Judgment of Israel's women.

16 Moreover the Lord says:

“Because the daughters of Zion are haughty,
And walk with [l]outstretched necks
And [m]wanton eyes,
Walking and [n]mincing as they go,
Making a jingling with their feet,
17 Therefore the Lord will strike with a scab
The crown of the head of the daughters of Zion,

And the Lord will uncover their secret parts.”...........

24 And so it shall be:

Instead of a sweet smell there will be a stench;
Instead of a sash, a rope;
Instead of well-set hair, baldness;
Instead of a rich robe, a girding of sackcloth;
And [p]branding instead of beauty.
25 Your men shall fall by the sword,
And your [q]mighty in the war.

26 Her gates shall lament and mourn,
And she being desolate shall sit on the ground.  (Isaiah 3:16,17)(Isaiah 3:24-26)

In 2024, a lot of liberal women decided to shave their heads in shame due to Donald Trump winning.  A woman's hair is her glory.  Having a shaved head may have been a sign of shame.  Brittany Spears went crazy once upon a time, and shaved her head, and did many of the things in Isaiah 3.  She exposed herself.  Madonna had invited her into Kabbalah.  Kabbalah would be "Advanced Jewish Mysticism for deniers of Christ," and later, Brittany and Madonna had a falling out.  Some months later, Brittany started going crazy...Was it crazy or was it Spiritual?

On this blog, sometimes we have delved into some deep spiritual things.  Given God gave a man something, it may be like having an answer in the back of a math book.  Given a man has the right answer, it may not be too hard to work it out.  Cultural or Spiritual?  (1 Corinthians 11:4-6)  It is Spiritual.   Given someone was unaware before....now you are.

Addendum:

Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives,when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.  (1 Peter 3: 1-6)

Let us go to a mega Church.  How do the women dress there?  Are the girls wearing string tops and short shorts with faces full of make up?  They can't even wear string tops to public school.  It is against the dress code.  Why would they dress like that for Church? Her mom possibly was dressed really nice with a big head of hair full of hairspray.

A woman in sin was made a liar.   She lies to protect her reputation.  She may have had a face full of make up.  She had a false face.  She was one way in public, and some other way in private?

Was someone selectively reading the Bible, and discarding things they didn't like or care for?  There may have been a tradition of that, and someone was just in the tradition.  Bad traditions may have had a root.  There may have been corruption in leadership somewhere.  It may have been a hundred or couple hundred years ago.  There was corruption somewhere.
